The ‘Blue Lives Matter’ law officially goes into effect today and Louisiana is the first state to put this kind of law in place. The law makes it a hate crime to target police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. Under the new law anyone convicted of committing a felony hate crime could face five years in prison or a maximum five thousand dollar fine. Traditionally, a crime is considered a hate crime if the victim is targeted because of identity-based characteristics such as their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation. Louisiana becomes the first state to add one’s chosen vocation to that list and it hits home for the Shreveport Police Department. Last August, officer ThomasLavalley was shot and killed on duty after responding to a suspicious person call. His accused killer, GroverCannon is in jail awaiting trial.
